Behind the Rock: How We Helped Bring AlpenFury to Life at Canada’s Wonderland

ree

When we got the call to work on a brand-new coaster being built through Wonder Mountain, we knew this was going to be something big. AlpenFury is Canada’s Wonderland’s newest record-breaking ride and one of the most ambitious attractions they’ve built in years. And we’re proud to say: we helped bring the mountain to life!

ree

Our team at Rockscapes of Canada was brought in to lead the artificial rockwork and theming throughout the project. From reshaping parts of Wonder Mountain to creating rock caves, spires, and a glowing underground tunnel, this was an all-hands-on-deck kind of build.

The Scope of Our Work

AlpenFury isn’t just a roller coaster, it’s a multi-sensory story. Our job was to help make the environment feel like riders are really charging through an ancient alpine mountain, with all the drama and danger that comes with it.

ree

Here’s what we built:

  • Reinforced and patched existing rockwork on Wonder Mountain to blend seamlessly with the new ride infrastructure.

  • Fabricated entirely new caves and rock tunnels, including the underground launch tunnel where riders are blasted into the mountain at full speed.

  • Sculpted jagged artificial rock spires that reflect the in-ride lighting (red and blue sequences), heightening the feeling that something is about to explode.

  • Created the epic rocky portal at the tunnel entry, designed to feel like you’re crashing through the mountain face.

ree

We were able to integrate our new rockwork with the existing mountain, all hand sculpted and fabricated by our team. We worked closely with ride engineers and designers, to make sure the visuals and atmosphere all worked in sync, down to how light would bounce off the carved textures during the ride’s launch.

The Ride: A Few Wild Stats

This coaster doesn’t hold back. Some of our favourite facts about AlpenFury:

  • Canada’s first dual-launch coaster – it launches you forward twice, once at the start and again deep inside the mountain.

  • Speeds up to 115 km/h (71 mph).

  • Features a 110° overbanked turn, throwing riders into a beyond-vertical twist.

  • Travels through multiple caves, caverns, and the heart of Wonder Mountain.

ree

  • Features a dramatic underground launch tunnel; one of the most intense moments of the ride, where we created artificial cave feautres and rock spires all throughout.

  • Over 3,200 feet of coaster track, weaving through rock and iconic terrain.

  • AlpenFury is breaking multiple records as the longest, tallest, and fastest launch coaster in Canada.

Collaborating with the Best

We were one of many talented teams who came together to make AlpenFury a reality. The coaster was built by Premier Rides, with track fabrication by Intermountain Lift and support structures by OCEM. Canada’s Wonderland and Cedar Fair’s internal teams handled site prep, coordination, and electrical — and we worked side by side with them from concept to completion.

This was also our first time working with Premier Rides, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the trust and collaboration. Seeing our work wrap around their ride system, with that kind of speed and movement, brought a whole new layer of excitement.

What This Means for Us

AlpenFury strengthens what we’ve always believed in: creating immersive, natural-feeling environments that tell a story, whether for animals, water features, or thrill rides.

This build also marks our deepest integration yet into ride theming and story-driven coaster design. We’re proud of how we adapted to tight project timelines, complex engineering around a heritage park icon (Wonder Mountain), layering rock around dynamic, high-speed ride elements and working safely and efficiently inside a fully operational park

ree

More than anything, we’re proud of our crew. They poured their talent, grit, and creativity into every inch of rock!

If you’re heading to Canada’s Wonderland this season, we hope you enjoy this epic new ride! And stay tuned for our full build video coming to our Youtube channel soon!

What a exciting dream creation! I can’t believe how they fit that ride in the land space they had . To make that work is something !

Great job on your end as I could imagine the pressure of it all . Sounds like a cool ride too . Just the logistics of spraying would of been a challenge .

Keep it up love it ! Jay . Mock Rock Australia !
